Backing up is not so hard to do
(Added: 5/14/10)
From IdealWare
I had a close call last week with an internal database last week. Though I don?t consider myself an expert on back-up and network security issues anymore, folks nonetheless ask all the time. I got through our little crisis because at least this time I listened to my own advice and was prepared.
These days, the volume of storage continues to grow, individually and organizationally, and desktop and network environments also continue to become more complex. Meanwhile, back-up options have also continued to expand. It makes sense to check yourself and your organization on three types of questions:
1. Will every document and file that could have changed today get backed up tonight?
2. Can I go back to a previous version of a critical file if the most recently backed up version turns out to have problems?
3. Can I recover from total meltdown of my computer or server?

Adventures in Executive Dashboards
(Added: 2/2/100)
Three examples of how nonprofits used executive dashboards to maximize data and help refine goals
Nonprofits track all sorts of information, from financial data like fundraising success and year-to-date spending, to data on event participation, volunteers, new supporters, and more. While it is difficult enough just to track the data, its much easier to understand and take action on this information if its pulled together with easy-to-understand visuals. With the right display, organizational metrics can be pulled out of a data-heavy realm that only an analyst could love to an organization-wide communication method that can be used for internal goal-setting, board meetings, reporting to funders, or executive decision making. Executive dashboards can provide just that perspective.
A good dashboard pulls together a number of different, perhaps disparate, metrics into a visually-appealing, easy to understand interface. Often, these dashboards show indicators to make it easy see progress against a goal for instance, a traffic light icon with a green, yellow, or red light might show whether or not fundraising revenue is proceeding according to plan.
